I have discovered that the Hendricks County Animal Shelter is not the same thing as the Hendricks County Humane Society. The facility that houses the animals does not allow volunteers, does not list their dogs on petfinder and apparently only allows adoptions from 9am-1pm two Saturdays of the month. This seems unacceptable. I am trying to find out more information. Can anyone help me?

If it's the place I'm thinking of, I've been there once. A so-called friend talked me into taking a friendly stray that I found in a park there a couple of years ago... I wanted to take him to HSI (he may have been put down there too, but at least he'd have had some chance). Still makes me sick to think I took that poor cat there, IACC is quite cheerful and welcoming in comparison.
I am the founder of a Facebook group that's dedicated to exposing the many of the problems at the Hendricks County Animal Control Shelter, and you are 100% correct in all that you said. The Hendricks County Humane Society has tried for over 10 years to join forces with the Hendricks County Animal Control shelter, even donating $80,000 to help HCAC build a new shelter, but the Cheif Animal Control Officer who runs HCAC (whose name is Mary Anne Lewis by the way) wants no help from volunteers or HC Humane Society. Do not take any animal to HCAC because it is almost a certain death sentence.

Here's just a small number of the issues that we know of...

1. Cages are hosed down while the dogs remain in the cage leaving them soaking wet all day.

2. HCAC does not allow ANY volunteers to work in its shelter.

3. Animals at HCAC shelter are never listed online. HCAC does NOT use Pet Finder (even though it's free), and HCAC does not use any available resources to try to get information about the animals they have up for adoption.

4. Animals do not receive a name at HCAC shelter, and no bio's are ever written about any of the adoptable animals leaving people guessing about the animal.

5. Once you walk into HCAC shelter, you are coldly greeted by unfriendly staff wearing combat boots and military-looking "animal control officer" attire.

6. HCAC shelter has the most limited operating hours out of any government-funded shelter in the State of Indiana, only staying open the 1st & 3rd Saturday of the month from 9am-1pm, Mon 8am-6pm, Tues 8am-4pm, Wed 8am-4pm, Thur 12pm-6pm, and Fri 8am-4pm.

7. HCAC refuses to provide statistical data to show how successful their adoption program is working. Based on what we've seen, it can't be good...

The Hendricks County Humane Society is currently working to create an HCAC shelter board that would be responsible for general oversight of the shelter, May Anne Lewis, and making certain that HCAC is properly and humanely caring for the animals. There used to be a similar board in place about 10 years ago, but it was disbanned by Mary Anne Lewis.

Contact the Hendricks County Humane Society and let them know that you want to help put an end to the needless suffering of animals at the HCAC shelter. Their number is (317) 718-0312, and their email is contacthchs@hendrickscountyhumanesociety.org

Also, make sure you join our Facebook page that's directly aimed at fixing the problems at HCAC shelter: Click Here
I am planning on getting involved with this group. Please learn more by clicking the link below.

Opra Please help these animals, Tonight I literally just found out a few minutes ago about a Humane Shelter in Hendricks County, Indiana that are ABUSING YES ABUSING the animals coming into their shelter!
You are the first person I thought of when I read this terrible story. The advice is to call them and tell them we know what their doing and to email them a well.
I can't just do that Oprah I just have to do more...I WANT TO SHUT TO BAS**RDS DOWN FOR GOOD. If so many know about this shelter abusing their animals, how are they able to stay in operation? I am going to start investigating on my own tomorrow and will get them shut down some how, but I know with your help you can get them shut down in my next breath.
I'm shaking as I write this because I have a two year old rescue Lab named Wheebs. He was terribly abused by his previous owners. Although it's been eight months since I adopted Wheebs, his emotional scares still haunt him. He knows he is safe with me and his two brothers, but he can't get over his two previous years of abuse.
Just think of those poor puppies and kittens going through their abuse at that shelter right now. I'm going to get them out of there.
FOR HEAVENS SAKE FOLKS ...THIS INFORMATION IS TERRIBLY DISTURBING...TO THINK THAT SUCH CRUELTY IS NOT STOPPED IMMEDIATELY...IT SHOULD BE EXPOSED TO THE PUBLIC THRU THE NEWSPAPERS OR RADIO TALK SHOWS..PUT ON THE PET PALS SHOW...MAKE SURE TONY STEWART HEARS ABOUT IT , HE'LL EXPOSE IT AND STOP IT. MAKE IT KNOWN TO THE PUBLIC..IF I HADN'T COME TO SEE THIS SITE I NEVER HEARD OF THIS ORGANIZATION AND THEIR CRUELTY. SPEAK OUT FOLKS ....CALL THE MAYOR .....DO SOMETHING

I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN HELPING MY EMAIL IS b.wiese @sbcglobal.net please let me hear from someone.

HCAC and HCHS are not the same, the original poster stated this in the first sentence. The issue is with HCAC and their policies and has nothing to do with the HCHS. It's too bad they don't seem to be able to work together at the present time.
Hi My name is Pat from Kansas, I inadvertentlay sent an email to the wrong shelter in Hendericks Co, IN.

I want to share my information with you because you seemed to be as concerened aout the animals as I am. The email is from HCAS or the GOOD. They are forwarding it to the BAD shelter, but I doubt I will receive any response from them.

The thing is, I copied and pasted the BAD shelter's email address when I sent my email so I need to recheck what their email address is.

I didn't look at the email address when I sent it since it was a copy and paste thing so it went to he GOOD GUYS instead.

Take Care
Pat

Pat,

Thank you for contacting us!

Let me first explain that the HCHS is a not-for-profit group of volunteers; we do not own or operate a shelter or rescue group of any kind. The Hendricks County Animal Control Facility, which serves as the local shelter, is owned and operated by county government officials. We do have some concerns about the procedures being utllized at that facility and have organized a committee to address these concerns.

I will forward this email to the chair person of that committee to share more with you about how you can get involved, if you like.

I am told your shelter is doing some terrible things, but I refuse to believe this rumor mill and want to hear from you myself.

Two animal/pet websites I am a member of are reporting your shelter is abusing animals for one..please tell me this isn't true. Another of the many accusations is you put animals to death instead of up for adoption. I'll stop there as that is enough.

If you could send me anything to verify these rumors are absolutely false so I can show these people you are an upstanding and very caring Humane Shelter, please do.

This is extremely disturbing. Anyone or any place that deliberately causes harm to a human or especially an innocent animal sickens me. I dearly hope this will be investigated and exposed for what it truly is and those responsible will be held to account for their malicious actions.

Yes I understand the HCHumane Society are the good guy... HCCounty Animal Control are the people that need correction.
It will be so interesting to learn what the committee will accomplish at the HC Humane Society.....I sure hope they get it changed at Animal Control. There is strength in numbers are they might want to stay in touch with all of us as we would support them. Yes?

My dog licks the furniture constantly. What is this about?

Oh no! It’s very possible the poor guy has a tummyache. Maybe his prepared kibble is giving him some acid reflux? But, it could also be a hiatal hernia, which is a weakness of the diaphragm that allows a bubble from the stomach to come up into the chest cavity.

Humans with this have GERD – gastroesophageal reflux disease -- and are often given antacids, which have been linked to…
