My friend, Nick, recently sent me an email seeking info on shelters and rescues because he was looking for a new dog. It was a bittersweet search as he had just lost his other dog due to a savage attack on a walking trail. I'm posting his blog about the incident, which appeared on the Indystar.com website, in which Nick makes a plea to pet owners to keep their animals vaccinated and, if needed, muzzled in public.
The good news is that he has a new dog, Danny, a 1-year-old Lhasa Apso from the Southside Animal Shelter. There's a pic of Danny below.

Comment by Diane Powell on December 27, 2011 at 11:34am I had a bad experience with a pitbull years ago. I wish that those who have pitbulls wouldn't take things for granted. If a person has a pitbull they need to take extra steps to protect themself, others and other animals. A large pitbull wanted my little dog. Andy would have been killed just like this little dog. I guess I'm not upset with the breed as much as I am upset with the owners. People can be really stupid at times. Keeping a dog that they can not keep under control is an accident waiting to happen....and it did happen. I'm sure this wasn't the first time this person had no control over their dog. It just ended up as a very tragic accident this time.
I hope little Danny helps this person heal. I know he will be afraid around any large dog for a long time. That is how I was after the incident with the pitbull that wanted my Andy.
I agree about being responsible owners and being able to control your dog. I also feel like people who choose to own "bully" breeds should hold themselves to a higher standard due to all the bad press about their breeds. I don't agree with many of his comments about the breed being inherently dangerous and that all Pits can go into attack mode. He also seems to be hinting at breed specific laws which do not work. I'm very sorry for his loss-how awful to have to witness that, but I don't agree that all Pit type dogs can "go crazy" and attack at a moment's notice. It was a tragic accident and the other owner most definitely was not being responsible especially since their dog was on a leash and they still couldn't control it. dogs like that have no business being out in public if they can't be handled and controlled.
Oh no! It’s very possible the poor guy has a tummyache. Maybe his prepared kibble is giving him some acid reflux? But, it could also be a hiatal hernia, which is a weakness of the diaphragm that allows a bubble from the stomach to come up into the chest cavity.

Humans with this have GERD – gastroesophageal reflux disease -- and are often given antacids, which have been linked to…
