Cat Hit by car, shot and left for dead is saved!

INDIANAPOLIS (December 14, 2010) – A cat who was hit by a car, shot and left for dead in Indianapolis over the weekend is now being cared for by the Humane Society of Indianapolis (IndyHumane) and may make a recovery in time for the holidays.

The 4-year-old male Russian Blue cat, named “Big Bob,” was found by volunteers of local cat-advocacy group IndyFeral, who then brought him to IndyHumane for life-saving medical care. The cat’s thigh had shrapnel from a firearm embedded in it, and the leg’s fracture was so significant that the leg had to be amputated in order to save the cat’s life. Big Bob is doing well after his surgery and is being monitored by IndyHumane’s veterinary team, which provides a variety of care in addition to spay/neuter surgeries to dogs and cats surrendered to the shelter and transferred from other rescue groups.

“Around the holidays, it’s especially abhorrent that someone would shoot a cat and leave it to die,” said John Aleshire, CEO of the Humane Society of Indianapolis. “IndyHumane and IndyFeral were fortunate to have found the cat in time to save its life. We’re especially thankful to our donors for their support – without them, we wouldn’t be able to save animals like Big Bob.”

The locally based, independent non-profit Humane Society of Indianapolis relies on charitable contributions from individual
donors for the vast majority of its funding, and invests $600 - $800 in the average animal’s care. However, Big Bob’s surgery and recovery will far exceed that cost. Donations to assist with Big Bob’s care can be made in person at the shelter, 7929 N. Michigan Rd., online at IndyHumane.org, or by calling 317-872-5650 extension 125. The shelter doesn’t put animals down because of space or time and will make Big Bob available for adoption after he recovers.

I am so glad Big Bob was found and didn't have to suffer.  I hope someone will adopt him.  The person who shot him and abused him is such a coward!

Where was he found? He looks just like the cat we called "Coach" because he had a Coach collar, this cat was a regular visitor to anyone's house who had a dog door, I turned around one time and there he was in my kitchen. I found out who he belonged to and brought him back. He came back and ate two of my aquarium fish so I took him back home again. Those people moved and took him with them but he was a roamer. This picture was taken two halloweens ago. If it's him his real name is Kitty and he was originally from the area of 55th and Indianola.

Poor kitty... glad to know he'll be OK!

He looks a lot like my Charlie.

I almost didn't read this when sent to me as I couldn't bare another abuse story.

I am SO tired of people abusing anything and anyone who is unable to defend themself.

Thank you for a happy ending.

Let's pray someday that abuse of all kinds will cease!

I hope they find and prosecute the heartless person who did this to Big Bob. But more importantly, I'm so happy Big Blue will be okay. Kudos to Indy Feral & Indy Humane for helping this beautiful blue boy. I wish our family could take him in. We have a soft spot for all kitties, but especially Russian Blues and disabled cats. Feel better soon, Big Bob!

Oh my gosh!  Poor kitteh.  I hope he gets well soon and gets a wonderful new home as soon as he's able to be adopted.

My dog licks the furniture constantly. What is this about?

Oh no! It’s very possible the poor guy has a tummyache. Maybe his prepared kibble is giving him some acid reflux? But, it could also be a hiatal hernia, which is a weakness of the diaphragm that allows a bubble from the stomach to come up into the chest cavity.

Humans with this have GERD – gastroesophageal reflux disease -- and are often given antacids, which have been linked to…

Indiana’s Weather For Wednesday

seven-day-indy-scaled
Take a deep breath. We are finished with the 80′s and 90′s for the rest of the week and at least half the weekend. Expect breezy, dry west to northwest winds today and a good dose of sunshine. The mix tomorrow will be mostly clouds, and we’ve got a decent shot at wonderfully wet, widespread [...]
