I love dogs with all my heart, but when you have a situation with kids who may be at risk with a pet, you must act. I got a call from Brandi asking for help with her dogs Dash and Bella. She explained they had been fighting over toys, and knowing these were strong breeds that could definitely do some damage, I was pretty concerned. But when I found out she had a 7 year old boy at home, I knew it was critical to address the situation immediately. Even though the dogs were not directly threatening her son in any way, one of the most common reasons people, especially children, get bitten is by getting in the middle of a dog fight. So, the first thing I asked her to do was keep her son away from the dogs until I could do a home visit.
Dash and Bella engaged in a couple of fights over toys, so, I explained to Brandi that the main problem we were dealing with is called resource guarding. I don’t disagree with dogs having their own toys, but it is important for them to understand when they can play with them and that ALL the toys belong to the pack leader--in this case, Brandi. Once Brandi established the basic rule that all the toys in the house were HER possessions, the problem was over, and most importantly, her son Dreyton could safely interact with their dogs without fear of getting harmed during a fight.
When dogs fight, people are quick to label them as "aggressive" without truly understanding the cause behind their behaviors. If you have a tense or potentially dangerous situation at home with your pets, please consult a professional to help you figure out the best way to use your calm energy to control your pack before it's too late.
