I tried to volunteer at the Hendricks County Humane Society, a county run facility located in Danville, Indiana. I was told they do not allow volunteers. I cannot find them on petfinder. I have heard they have an incredibly high amount of animals they euthanize. Apparently there is a group that does volunteer work and fundraisers in Hendricks County but they are not affiliated with the shelter facility. This seems insane to me. Does anyone know if this is true? Is anything being done to help with this? It seems crazy they would turn away help. Any knowledge/comments/etc on this would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I recently visited jcas and put my name on the list to volunteer walking dogs etc. The girl at the desk had no information and was completely useless, she was extremely busy chatting with friend. I haven't heard a word from them. Beats me.

JCAC went down hill years ago after a friend of our family left to raise her family. Her husband is one of the two downtown vets. It is much better now. Good thing. Lots of pet lovers around these parts. This is a bit off subject, but why do they call the animal shelter's directer the "warden?" Did those animals break some law for just being born into the world? That particular word used relating to pets just makes me sad.

The Johnson County Animal Control used to be the same way. I tried to volunteer there and was turned away. Thank goodness they have a warden now that is all about saving every dog he can and getting as many volunteers as can be had. I would talk to the warden and find out what you can straight from the horse's mouth.

I know that they (Hendricks Co Animal Shelter) have had a reputation for short stays and frequent euthanization - I work with a small all volunteer group called "Happier Tails of The Ark" in Fillmore, IN in Putnam Co. (arkfostercare.com) and we - Happier Tails - need volunteers to foster cats to socialize them and help get them adopted. I can't imagine anyone in the animal shelter ZONE who doesn't need volunteers - even to give the caged / even free roaming cats/dogs socialization, human interaction, etc. I think fostering cats and dogs is an important step in finding forever homes - the foster parent can give vital info on the animal to make a good match in adoption placement.

Indiana’s Weather For Saturday

seven-day-indy-scaled
What’s the biggest weather story today? The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind. Blame last night’s Arctic cold front for frigid, frisky breezes gusting to 30 mph today. That will keep chills in the single digits during the day, and near zero tonight. It won’t be quite as windy tomorrow, and the prospects [...]
