Please read Forever Friends Great Dane Rescue's story:
"Rescue is a tireless, selfless job. If our volunteers aren’t giving up their time fundraising, writing for grants, responding to emails, phone calls, transporting dogs, etc. they are giving up their homes and hearts fostering the poor souls that are given up to our group.
Some dogs are surrendered by their owners directly to our group, some or dumped at shelters, and some are abandoned on the streets or in their homes. There are always those special cases or special needs dogs that come through your group but we seem to have had our fair share this year beginning with Princess. We received a call from a kill shelter in northern Indiana that a family had surrendered their 8 year old Great Dane. They left her saying that she was “sick.” Princess had a very visible growth on one her mammary area. After further testing, what we all knew was confirmed…Princess had highly malignant cancer. Princess was adopted by her foster mom and she lived out what few months she had left knowing what it was like to be truly loved.
A few weeks later we received a call about Charlie, Molly, and Noah. They were abandoned by their owners in their home for at least a month with no food and little water. All were severely malnourished, infested with worms, and covered in fleas. But it was Noah that touched so many hearts. After initial x-rays it was believed that Noah’s back had been broken. However, after further consultation with veterinarians at Purdue, it was determined that he was born with a condition known as Hemi Vertebrae. After a long recovery, Molly now lives with her forever family and Noah is currently up for adoption as a special needs’ Great Dane.
And within the last two months, we were notified about Mabel and her 4 pups…they had been dumped at an abandoned warehouse where Animal Control found and took them in. It is believed that Mabel is 6 but has the physique and teeth of a 9 year old from years of breeding. Her puppies were approximately 9 weeks old when we received them but were the size of normal 4 week old Great Dane puppies. They were all suffering from worms and giardia…including Mabel. However her story gets worse; not only did she have a severe respiratory infection, she was also heartworm positive. Mabel’s puppies are now in their foster homes recovering and preparing for the forever families. They will be up for adoption in about 2 months. Mabel will undergo heartworm treatment if her body can withstand it. If not, she will be permanently fostered as part of our group.
It is cases like these that draw the volunteers and supporters of our group closer to each other. We bond over the stories of these dogs, their needs, and their care. However, it is also cases like these that become a financial burden for our group as well. We never regret our decisions to take on cases such as these…we just get out there and work a little harder so that we can continue doing what we love so much."

Oh no! It’s very possible the poor guy has a tummyache. Maybe his prepared kibble is giving him some acid reflux? But, it could also be a hiatal hernia, which is a weakness of the diaphragm that allows a bubble from the stomach to come up into the chest cavity.

Humans with this have GERD – gastroesophageal reflux disease -- and are often given antacids, which have been linked to…
