Out of sight, out of mind is how the old adage goes, but this is not a safe attitude to possess when it comes to a nearly 100% fatal infection like Rabies Virus. Most of us think that the “Old Yeller” days are behind us, and fortunately, cases of pet and human Rabies infection have been dramatically reduced through years of consistent public education and pet vaccination. However, Rabies Virus has not been eradicated, and cases still occur. Wild animals can harbor Rabies Virus and potentially transmit the disease to dogs, cats, and even people. In fact, the Indiana State Board of Animal Health reports that more than 35 bats tested positive for Rabies in Indiana during 2009. It is the continued, diligent vaccination of our pets that keeps Rabies Virus largely contained to the wildlife population. Since we humans interact so closely with our pets, protecting them from Rabies infection is essential to preventing Rabies infection in people.
