Regarding the Dog-O-Matic Washing Machine....

Just saw this machine featured in one of the content blocks along the side of the homepage.... Have any of you ever used one of these? I used to work at a dog daycare, and I HATED subjecting dogs to this when owners wanted to use it. Dogs DO NOT like this thing as a general rule. You put them in this thing that looks like a microwave and shut the door, and they immediately start freaking out, clawing at the glass. Then water starts spraying them, and they can't get away from it. After a couple minutes of this, the soap starts in. By this time, the dogs look completely traumatized. Never mind the fact that the operator of the thing has to stand there and look into their pleading eyes the whole time... I used to just stand there and say "I'm sorry, Buddy..." over and over again! ha! So then the thing "rinses" them. I say that in quotes because it NEVER gets all the soap out. Then it blows air at them and basically dries soap residue into their fur and skin.

Seriously... there's no substitute for a real bath given by human hands. Dogs need to be reassured when they are under stress, and bath time should be enjoyable for them! Also, it is so important to thoroughly rinse detergent from a dog's coat! When I worked at the daycare, if people were opting for this machine instead of a "self-wash", I'd usually offer to wash the dog myself. It just wasn't worth it to me to put them thru that.

Owning a grooming shop, we much prefer to be more hands on with the dogs. How else can you tell if they are clean and well rinsed. Nothing beats hand washing.

This machine sounds horrible. I hand wash my dog, Buddy...when he lets me. Two of my cats like to jump into the dryer because it is warm. I'm always afraid I'll shut them in there by mistake. This machine reminds me of that. It makes my skin crawl just thinking about it.

My dog licks the furniture constantly. What is this about?

Oh no! It’s very possible the poor guy has a tummyache. Maybe his prepared kibble is giving him some acid reflux? But, it could also be a hiatal hernia, which is a weakness of the diaphragm that allows a bubble from the stomach to come up into the chest cavity.

Humans with this have GERD – gastroesophageal reflux disease -- and are often given antacids, which have been linked to…

Indiana’s Weather For Wednesday

seven-day-indy-scaled
Take a deep breath. We are finished with the 80′s and 90′s for the rest of the week and at least half the weekend. Expect breezy, dry west to northwest winds today and a good dose of sunshine. The mix tomorrow will be mostly clouds, and we’ve got a decent shot at wonderfully wet, widespread [...]
